Punjabi singer Dharampreet, known in rural Punjab for sad songs, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Bathinda town, his family said on Tuesday.

He was under depression for quite sometime, as his career was on a decline and he was upset about it.

The 38-year-old singer, who made name for singing in traditional style, will be cremated in Bathinda later Tuesday, his family said.

"He had been saying to his mother for the past few days that this fan will take his life," his friend said.

Just a few hours before committing the suicide, the singer had returned home after performing at a show in Amritsar.

"Emotions of Heart" was his last album released in 2010.
