Saskatchewan To Review How Legal Marijuana Would Affect Driver Safety

The Canadian Press, 26 May, 2016 11:32 AM
  • Saskatchewan To Review How Legal Marijuana Would Affect Driver Safety
REGINA — Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says his government will study how legalizing marijuana would affect driver safety.

Wall says the federal government hasn't made it clear how its plan to legalize pot would deal with preventing impaired driving due to marijuana use.

He has asked three cabinet ministers, including Justice Minister Gordon Wyant, to review how legalized pot would affect the law, enforcement and regulatory issues.

Wall says their findings will be forwarded to a federal task force that is reviewing marijuana legalization.

The premier says his ministers will talk with police and groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators.

Wall says he wants recommendations aimed at ensuring that legal pot doesn’t lead to more deaths and injuries on Saskatchewan roads.

"Legalizing marijuana could certainly mean more impaired drivers, which no one wants," Wall said in a release Wednesday.

"The Prime Minister has indicated that the federal government will release its plan for legalization next spring.

"We need to do our work now to ensure that when it happens, the safety of Saskatchewan drivers and passengers is protected."
