Scolded by Mother, 12-Year-Old Allegedly Commits Suicide In Delhi

IANS, 18 Jun, 2016 12:14 PM
A 12-year-old has girl allegedly committed suicide at her residence in south Delhi slum after being scolded by her mother for urinating in bed, police said on Saturday.

According to police, the girl was suffering from depression after being pulled up by her mother and mocked by her brothers about it.

The cops said as per initial investigation, the child had an argument with her younger brother over the mockery during which she climbed on the bed and hung herself from a ceiling fan using a dupatta.

When her younger brother saw her hanging from the fan, he alerted their maternal uncle who was residing nearby, after which the police was informed.

The girl was taken to Safdarjung Hospital here where she was declared brought dead, police said.

Doctors have confirmed it was clearly a suicide case and suspect no foul play involved in the incident, police said.

However, family members claimed that they suspected a foul play as the child could not have climbed onto the fan unless she was helped by someone. No suicide note was recovered from beside the body, police said.

The girl is survived by her father, a labour contractor, her mother and six siblings who stay in the slum near the railway station. An inquest proceeding under section 174 CrPC has been initiated.

The body was handed over to the family members last night, police said, adding the victim's uncle would be questioned.
