SGPC Declares Golden Temple Complex ‘No-Vehicle’ Zone

  • SGPC Declares Golden Temple Complex ‘No-Vehicle’ Zone

The SGPC has declared the passage leading to the SGPC headquarters, its administrative offices and serais in the Golden Temple complex as a “no-vehicle” zone.

The SGPC has declared that all vehicles belonging to its officials, including president Gobind Singh Longowal, and devotees would not be allowed inside the shrine complex.

The SGPC has put up a instruction board on the entry route to the Golden Temple complex asking its staffers not to take their vehicles beyond that point.

This will not only decongest the path but also help in controlling pollution.

The passage leads to three major SGPC offices – its head office Teja Singh Samundri Hall, Dharam Parchar Committee office and the Golden Temple office — in addition to four serais.

On December 16, three devotees, including a seven-year-old child, were injured when a Volkswagen car went out of control and hit them near Teja Singh Samundri Hall.

SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said the decision would be applicable from December 31.

“All SGPC staffers have already started following it,” he said.

There is also a proposal to erect automated barricades on the lines of the ones already installed on the heritage street to prevent vehicles from passing through this stretch.

Dr Singh said whenever there is any VVIP movement or any emergency situation, these barricades could easily be placed down.
