Surrey Celebrates Vaisakhi: Thousands Turn Out To Participate In The Biggest Vaisakhi Parade

Darpan News Desk, 22 Apr, 2017 05:10 PM

Vaisakhi, the harvest festival, was celebrated in Surrey April 22, with much delight and elation. Individuals came out in droves to attend the Nagar Kirtan procession and celebrate the festival which commemorates the birth of the Khalsa and also marks the New Year for Sikhs.

"Vaisakhi is an important reminder of the proud and enduring Sikh culture. For over a century, your contributions to British Columbia have enriched us all. Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, to grow our economy and strengthen our communities," BC Premier Christy Clark said in a statement.

“On behalf of all British Columbians, I wish you prosperity, health and happiness as you celebrate with your friends, family and community, and for the coming year."

The Nagar Kirtan commenced at the Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar Temple at 85th Avenue, and travelled along 124th Street, then the procession turned left onto 75th Avenue, continuing along 76th Avenue. The parade then headed up 128th Street, and the Granth returned to the Gurdwara on 85th marking the conclusion of the procession.

At least 20 community groups marched in the parade ranging from the Sikh Motorcycle Club to Har Jus Kirtan, a 100-member team who performed traditional Sikh hymns.

Students from several Khalsa schools in B.C. sang traditional songs and played music throughout the parade. Many also practiced gatka, a martial art that includes spinning colourful chakars.

Tents lined the streets with families and businesses handing out free food in the Sikh spirit of service and generosity. Reflecting the welcoming nature of the event, everything from pizza to curries were offered.

"I think it's one of those festive times when people come out regardless of the weather," said event organizer Moninder Singh.

There was excitement in the air as parade attendees, ranging in ages and ethnicities, watched the floats during the Nagar Kirtan, and along the route, there were food stalls, booths and stages, which featured performers from religious groups singing Kirtan

DARPAN Magazine participated in the Nagar Kirtan, and the team handed out copies of the special Vaisakhi collector’s issue. We would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous year!
