Terrific Performance By India: Sachin Tendulkar

  • Terrific Performance By India: Sachin Tendulkar
Former batting great Sachin Tendulkar hailed India's 130-run victory over South Africa here Sunday, saying that it was a "terrific performance" by the defending champions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

India beat the Proteas to break their jinx of losing to the latter in World Cup matches. The Asian powerhouse had lost all their previous three Cup meetings in 1992, 1999 and 2011 to South Africa.

"Terrific performance team India. First win in a World Cup against South Africa. First time for me in the stands in a World Cup. Memorable firsts," tweeted Tendulkar.

Guided by Shikhar Dhawan's match-winning knock of 137, India posted a strong total of 307/7 off their 50 overs. In reply, South Africa folded up for 177 in only 40.2 overs.

The former right-handed batsman also expressed his feelings about visiting the historic 90,000-capacity stadium.

"Always special to be back at cricket stadiums. Atmosphere at the MCG is fantastic! #CWC15 #IndvsSA," tweeted the 41-year-old, posting a selfie with the crowd in the background.

Tendulkar was seen sitting and having a discussion with International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive officer (CEO) Dave Richardson. Regarded as the greatest batsman of modern era, the Mumbaikar is the brand ambassador of the ICC World Cup 2015.

The crowd at the iconic stadium erupted in loud cheers, chanting "Sachin! Sachin!" after getting a glimpse of the former opening batsman on the big screens at the ground. Tendulkar, in response, waved to the jubilant spectators, who were mostly Indians.

Later, several photos of Tendulkar went viral on social networking sites where he was seen in-and-around the stadium.

Tendulkar was part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad.
