New Delhi, July 26 (IANS) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said he tried to convince the former Punjab Advocate General (AG) Anmol Rattan Sidhu for a couple of days to take back his resignation.
"He is a very senior lawyer and a member of our team. In the future also, we will take legal advice from him. For 2-4 days I even tried to convince him to stay but he said that he had some commitments and engagements in near future," the Punjab Chief Minister said while speaking to the media persons at the Parliament premises.
Mann further informed that the Punjab government has appointed a senior lawyer Vineet Ghai as the new Advocate General.
"We want an Advocate General to have such a team so that we are not forced to hire costly lawyers from outside. Be it Session Court, High Court or Supreme Court, the AG's team should be able to put forth the voice of the people of Punjab," the CM averred.
Anmol Rattan Sidhu resigned from his post earlier in the day. In a resignation letter to Chief Minister Mann, Sidhu said he was resigning from the post owing to personal reasons. He was appointed to the post in March this year.
Currently lodged in Tihar jail in a MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) case, Bishnoi is allegedly involved in more than five dozen criminal cases lodged against him in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab. He had once threatened to kill Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
The Chief Minister said Moosewala was a multi-talented artist who was blessed with mesmerising voice and creativity. He said his untimely and tragic death has given a major blow to the music industry in general and millions of his fans in particular.
The plea, filed through advocate-on-record Namit Saxena and advocates Sarthak Chaturvedi and Shubham Jaiswal, submitted that there is a storm of fear and terror in Punjab, which warrants interference by the Supreme Court as fundamental rights of entire population of Punjab have been jeopardised at large.
In less than 24 hours after his security was curtailed, singer-turned-actor-politician Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead by gangsters close to his ancestral village in Mansa in broad daylight.
Moosewala, 29, was brutally murdered on May 29 by assailants who fired multiple rounds at him near his native village in Punjab's Mansa district. He was rushed to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.
The gangster had moved the high court after a NIA court of Patiala House Court junked his plea on Monday. In the plea, he sought a direction to the Delhi Police and the Tihar Jail authorities to ensure all necessary security arrangements for him.
