Won't Marry Daughters Into Homes Sans Toilets: Sirsa Village Panchayat

    Inspired by Akshay Kumar-starrer 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha', a village panchayat in Haryana's Sirsa district has adopted a resolution they will not marry their daughters into families who do not have a toilet in their house.
     
     
    The Godikan village panchayat took the decision unanimously earlier this month, sarpanch Dharmpal Mundlia said today.
    The panchayat had adopted the resolution on June 8, he said.
     
     
    The state government had earlier arranged special screening of the movie 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha' for village sarpanches of Haryana to sensitise them about cleanliness and encourage them to work towards a 'Swachh Bharat'.
     
     
    Mundlia said inspired by the film he mooted the idea in a panchayat meeting after which the resolution was adopted.
     
     
    The resolution said residents of the village would marry off their daughters and sisters only into those families which have toilets in their houses.
     
     
    Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar congratulated the panchayat for its decision.
     
     
    "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat project envisioned an India free of open defecation, and a toilet in each home. The decision taken by the Godikan village is really appreciable," the chief minister said in a tweet.
     
     
    Appreciating the decision of the village panchayat, Khattar suggested that other panchayats should follow suit.
     
     
    Sarpanch Mundlia thanked Chief Minister Khattar for his support.
     
     
    "The chief minister's words of appreciation have boosted the morale of the villagers to work with more enthusiasm in future," he added.
     
     
    Earlier, the village panchayat was felicitated by the state government as every resident was paying their power bills regularly. Godikan has a population of about 4,000.
