Omar Elabi, Montreal Man Arrested In Alleged Online Threat Case Released Under Strict Conditions

The Canadian Press, 31 Mar, 2016 01:04 PM
MONTREAL — A young man arrested by police after allegedly sparking a police operation in his Montreal neighbourhood has been released on conditions.

Omar Elabi, 20, was freed under a list of strict conditions today after being detained since Tuesday.

Montreal police say an online threat brought to their attention was unfounded but triggered a massive security operation, forcing the evacuation of about 200 people from their homes for several hours.

Elabi doesn't face any criminal charges stemming from the incident.

Alexandre Goyette, Elabi's lawyer, says his client doesn't agree he created terror fears Tuesday and that he didn't have any criminal intention.

The case returns to court May 30.
