Six People Arrested After Vancouver Homeless Camp Moved Following Court Order

The Canadian Press, 25 Nov, 2016 01:13 PM
VANCOUVER — Police in Vancouver say six people have been arrested after city staff tried to take down tents at a relocated homeless camp.

Staff Sgt. Randy Fincham says officers were called to Thornton Park on Friday morning, where rangers from the Vancouver Park Board were trying to take down structures that were in contravention of a bylaw.

A court order required people living in a nearby homeless camp to vacate a site on city-owned property by Thursday evening, when the remaining residents voluntarily left before setting up their tents at the park.

Fincham says about 12 tents were set up and about 15 people were demonstrating when police arrived.

He says seven people refused to follow the directions of city staff and physically interfered when the tents were being dismantled.

Six people were arrested for breach of the peace, and one man was taken into custody for obstruction and resisting arrest.

Police say one man was provided with housing.
