Tumour Has Left This 38-year-old Man Half-Faced!

IANS, 07 Jul, 2017 01:42 PM

38-year-old man named Tim McGrath from Michigan, US was left with half face after it was ravaged by a cancerous tumour.

Tim was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcomak, which has left him with a grape fruit-sized tumour growing on his face.

Synovial Sarcoma affects the tissues that connect, support and surround other body structures and organs. It is resistant to many things, including chemotherapy, and the tumour continued to grow.

He was first diagnosed with the rare condition in February 2014 after complaining of severe jaw pain.

According to a report in Daily Mail, medical experts have managed to cut out the cancerous tumour, but his body rejected multiple attempts to rebuild it.

Reportedly, in October 2015, the 38-year-old was admitted to hospital where he remained for almost seven weeks following the initial 30 hour operation to remove and then reconstruct his face. But he was shocked to find part of his face disappeared after waking up from the surgery.

Now, Tim's face has been reconstructed with the help of top surgeon Dr Kongkrit Chaiyasate by using skin and muscle from his left leg, left forearm and a flap from his forehead. Even skin graphs were also used to help the healing process.

Dr Chaiyasate will continue with the reconstruction of Tim's face till 2018, which will further help his speech and give him the ability to eat and drink again.
