A simple 'Merry Christmas and Happy New Year' sign has garnered a lot of positive reaction

Regina Sikhs convey Christmas wishes say respecting all celebrations is important and spirit of Sikh religion conveys same message as Christians focus on.

The Sikh Society of Regina is getting into the spirit of Christmas.

A sign standing outside the society’s office is wishing passersby a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Kuldip Sahota, president of the society, believes it’s vital to keep Christmas as Christmas.

"When you say Merry Christmas you wish the other person peace, love and prosperity," he said. "And that's what we want to tell the people."

He says it’s important for all religions and cultures to respect one another’s beliefs and practices.

Sahota said they've had a positive response to the sign so far.

He also says taking part in all celebrations in the community is important.

Sahota points out that the spirit of his religion conveys the same message that Christians focus on this time of year.

“It’s time to wish everybody peace, love, joy on Earth, so everyone can live together in harmony,” Sahota said. “All these messages are the Sikhism message also.”
