All eyes are on Trump today as trade war continues to dominate election campaign

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 02 Apr, 2025 10:39 AM
  • All eyes are on Trump today as trade war continues to dominate election campaign

All eyes are on U.S. President Donald Trump as he prepares to hit multiple countries with "reciprocal" tariffs.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney is pausing his campaign to take part in meetings in Ottawa ahead of the expected levies.

On top of any "reciprocal" tariffs, it's not clear whether a temporary pause on separate economywide duties on Canada and Mexico — 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs, with a lower 10 per cent levy on energy — will be lifted today.

Trump, who is expected to discuss his reciprocal tariff agenda at the White House around 4 p.m. ET today, said in early March that the pause would last until April 2.

Carney, in his role as prime minister, is expected to meet virtually this afternoon with his Canada-U.S. relations council and then convene a cabinet committee after Trump's speech.

Meanwhile, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is set make an announcement in Winnipeg and join a picket line with local workers. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is scheduled to deliver a keynote address in Toronto and hold a rally in Kingston, Ont.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 2, 2025.

Donald Trump likes being on television. But the most dramatic moment of his political career — standing trial in the U.S. capital on charges of trying to subvert democracy — is set to transpire beyond the gaze of cameras. A growing chorus of voices, including from the former president's own defence team, hopes to convince the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court to change that.

Higher levels of COVID-19 in wastewater concentrations are being found in the Northeast and South, said Cristin Young, an epidemiologist at Biobot Analytics. And while no ibe version of omicron EG.5 is appearing more frequently, no particular variant of the virus is dominant. The variant has been dubbed “eris” but it’s an unofficial nickname and scientists aren’t using it.
