British Indian killer mom jailed for 11 years

Darpan News Desk IANS, 25 Aug, 2014 08:26 AM
  • British Indian killer mom jailed for 11 years
A British Indian woman, who battered her three-year-old son to death in Scotland, was Monday jailed for 11 years, a media report said.

The High Court in Edinburgh sentenced 35-year-old Rosdeep Adekoya who cried and wiped away tears throughout her court appearance, BBC reported.

Last month, Adekoya admitted to assaulting and killing her son, Mikaeel Kular, in their Edinburgh home and hiding his body in a forest area in Scotland's Fife county.

Defence counsel Brian McConnachie said that while the assault was "undoubtedly serious" it was completely out of character.

Earlier, Adekoya, a prisoner at Cornton Vale jail in Stirling, pleaded guilty of lying to the police that her son had gone missing, sparking a massive search by rescuers and emergency teams.

Adekoya "lost her temper" when her son was repeatedly sick after a trip to a Nando's restaurant at the city's Fountain Park.

The court heard Adekoya say that Mikaeel died on the night of Jan 14 from injuries inflicted Jan 12.

She smacked him and struck him on the body and head with a clenched fist.

She admitted repeatedly punching her son and causing his body to hit against a hard object and inflicting blunt injuries on his head and body.

Adekoya did not take him to a doctor because of the bruising.

She waited until Jan 16, two days after Mikaeel's death, to dial 999 and report her son missing.

She then told officers that Mikaeel had got out of bed and climbed on a stool to unlock the front door of his home.

Mikaeel's disappearance sparked a major police manhunt with as many as 300 officers involved in the search in January.
