Mexican president says she's cut a deal with Trump to delay tariffs by a month

  • Mexican president says she's cut a deal with Trump to delay tariffs by a month

Mexico's president says she spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump and he has agreed to delay the implementation of tariffs on her country for one month.

Claudia Sheinbaum says in a social media post that Mexico will send 10,000 members of its national guard to the U.S. border to combat drug trafficking.

She says she had a good conversation with Trump and the two countries will work together on security and trade.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also spoke this morning with Trump and the two leaders have a second call scheduled for this afternoon.

Trump signed an executive order on Saturday to hit Mexico and Canada with 25 per cent tariffs starting Tuesday.

Both countries promised to strike back with counter-tariffs.

Trudeau said over the weekend that he had been unable to speak directly with Trump since he took over the White House on Jan. 20.

Ottawa's counter-tariff plan would begin on Tuesday with 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in goods originating in the U.S.

In three weeks, Ottawa plans to add another $125 billion in tariffs on hundreds of other U.S. goods after consulting with industry.

Trudeau says additional non-tariff measures are being discussed by the federal and provincial governments, including some related to critical minerals, energy and procurement.
