Muktsar Man Beaten Up With Baseball Bat In New Zealand, Critical

IANS, 17 Aug, 2017 10:49 AM
A 26-year-old man from Punjab has been identified as victim of a brutal assault in Auckland.

A police spokesperson said earlier in the day to New Zealand’s 1 NEWS that the man had been attacked by someone wielding a baseball bat in Takanini on Tuesday night, and investigations were ongoing.

An assistant sub-inspector from Muktsar identified the victim as his son Satpal Singh.

Ajmer Singh, posted at Sadar Malout police station, said his son had been in New Zealand since November 2013, having first gone there to study, and had just got his work visa.

Singh said in a statement that his son was attacked at about 4.20 pm Indian Time on Tuesday and he was unaware of why the attack took place, but the attacker made away with his son’s cell phone.

“Satpal’s roommate Sukhpal called to tell me that he had been attacked when he was on a phone call. He had a severe head injury and been hospitalised, but is reportedly out of danger.”

A Police spokesperson had also told 1 NEWS that the man had been attacked by someone wielding a baseball bat, and investigations were ongoing.

"Police are further seeking the public's help to still identify an Indian male who was seriously assaulted in Takanini on Tuesday night," Bright said on Thursday.

"The man was left severely beaten on the footpath at approximately 10.20 pm on Tuesday night on Great South Road," he said.

Bright said the public response has been positive in assisting police with their enquiries, but the male still remains unidentified.

"It is critically important to identify this male, so his family and friends can offer him support while he remains in a serious condition," he said.

Police also asked the public to check on their friends, employees and work colleagues if they have not heard from or seen them since Tuesday evening.

Police are also seeking to talk to anyone who may have witnessed the assault or has any information about who the man was.
