WATCH: Life As A Turban-Wearing SIKH American Trucker

Darpan News Desk, 01 May, 2019 07:21 PM

A growing number of truckers in the U.S. are Sikhs from Punjab, India. Some of them have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border and faced detention to realize their American dream.

AJ+ Producer Shreen Khan rides along with one of these long-haul truckers, making chai and listening to Bollywood music in his big rig while hearing about his life on the road, why he left Punjab and the discrimination he's faced in the U.S.

About 30,000 more Punjabi Sikhs have gotten into trucking in the U.S. in the last few years – filling the need for truckers amid a nationwide shortage.

Punjabi Sikhs have been in America for over 120 years. This digital archive documents the stories and history of the community's earliest pioneers.
