Shades of Love: Modern Relationships Beyond Fairytales

  • Shades of Love: Modern Relationships Beyond Fairytales

In a world dominated by dating apps, hashtags, and "likes," love isn't what it used to be—and that's not a bad thing. Millennials and Gen Z are flipping the script on what it means to connect, reimagining love in an era where "breadcrumbing," "ghosting," and "superficial swipes" are everyday realities. Far from the formulaic fairytales of yesteryears, relationships today are raw, real, and deeply personal.

This Valentine’s Day, we’re taking a closer look at love beyond the filters—un-romanticizing grand gestures and instead finding magic in the messy, meaningful moments. For those navigating the single life, here’s the reminder you didn’t know you needed: love isn’t a one-size-fits-all fairytale, and success isn’t about the timelines set by others. True connection? It’s about rewriting the narrative to fit your own truth.

Meet three South Asian couples in Canada whose unique journeys paint a kaleidoscope of modern relationships and redefine what it means to love and be loved today.

Tharmila and Josh: A Love Written in the Stars
Tharmila Rajasingam – Realtor & Actor, Josh Tavares – Realtor

Tharmila Rajasingam met her Portuguese husband, Josh Tavares, at Toronto’s Rogers Centre, where they both worked at Blue Jays games. What began as a chance encounter grew into a relationship rooted in shared passions and deep values. Meeting at 20 years old, Tharmila reflects, “We were both going through a lot of the same things in life, and that allowed us to grow together really well.” She credits Josh’s kindness and unwavering support for her art during university as key to their bond. Coming from a traditional South Asian family, dating someone like Josh wasn’t the norm. “He was the only one who showed me warmth and prioritized my goals—for both of us, really,” she says.

Parenting two sons just 14 months apart while managing businesses and family pressures tested their relationship but brought them closer. "When we face conflict, we focus on logical thinking—writing out pros and cons, staying open-minded, and manifesting solutions," Tharmila explains. Reflecting on their dynamic, she adds, "I’m a big risk-taker, while Josh is more calculated. That balance keeps us grounded." She also notes, "Our connection feels like it was written in the stars—destiny or fate and is interconnected on many levels."

After years of togetherness, her hack is simple: “My biggest advice is to spend intentional time together. Josh and I make it a point to connect during early mornings before the kids wake up—those quiet moments help us align and dream together. We’re always setting goals, not just as a family but as a couple.”

Their mantra? "Live for baseball, travel, and love deeply—no matter what, we’ll make it through together as a family."

Love Lesson: Give each other a real chance. Learn together, grow together, and don’t shy away from challenges. There’s always room for growth, and the possibilities for what you can create together are endless.

Swiped Right to Forever: Wendy and Geet’s Recipe for Love and Laughter
Wendy Serrao – Sales and Marketing Professional, Geet Seth – Entrepreneur

Wendy Serrao and Geet Seth’s love story kicked off in the most 21st-century way—through a swipe on Tinder! Wendy couldn’t resist Geet’s T-shirt that proudly declared his love for beer and food, paired with his infectious smile. Geet was equally captivated by Wendy’s radiant smile. Their first date at Dundas Square quickly turned into a marathon—lunch, a movie, and over eight hours of conversation. Wendy knew Geet was the one after seeing his passion for life and his ability to dive into any conversation with enthusiasm. Six months in, Geet asked Wendy to be his girlfriend—only to realize Wendy had already assumed they were!

Their relationship is built on healthy self-love. "We’re fiercely independent partners who trust and support each other’s individuality," Wendy shares. Geet loves outdoor sports and boys' nights, while Wendy thrives in her indoor jungle of plants, cooking, and indulging in romantic thrillers. They treasure their time together but also value their own passions, knowing it strengthens their bond.

Despite coming from different cultures—Wendy Catholic and Geet Gujarati—the real test came when they planned not one but three weddings last year. "It was emotional, balancing family expectations and our own desires, but we learned the most valuable lesson: always put us first," Wendy says.

On resolving conflicts, she quips, "We’ve learned the hard way that avoiding or delaying discussions doesn’t work for us. I tend to internalize and overthink, while Geet prefers to confront issues head-on and move on.” They now prioritize talking things through, even if it takes a long conversation to reach a resolution. "We focus on understanding why the other person feels the way they do," she adds.

As die-hard foodies, Wendy and Geet keep their spark alive by exploring new restaurants. "Whether it’s a trendy spot or a hidden gem, sharing a great meal and having a meaningful conversation always brings us closer," Wendy says. But they know it’s the small moments that matter too—whether it’s cooking together, walking their fur-baby Kobe, or binge-watching Netflix.

Love Lesson: Never lose yourself in the relationship. Your individuality is what makes you unique. And, of course, talk it out. Communication is everything—whether celebrating the big moments or navigating the tough ones, holding on to those little moments will help you make it through anything.

Arranged but Unstoppable: Dilpreet and Amandeep’s Bold Leap of Faith
Dilpreet Samra – Nail Tech, Amandeep Samra – Realtor

Dilpreet and Amandeep Samra’s love story began in an arranged marriage setting. After their families had connected, the couple met and spent time getting to know each other. “It took us a couple of days to say yes,” Dilpreet laughs. “I was still unsure when I said yes, but I thought he seemed like a nice guy.” Despite their different upbringings—Dilpreet hailing from India and Amandeep from Canada—the couple felt a strong connection. "I was worried about the different dispositions, but we decided to move forward, and eventually, we got married."

Their relationship is defined by balance. Dilpreet describes herself as a “storm,” while Amandeep is the “calm” in their relationship. “Our mantra is simple—always listen to each other and never let a third person influence your decisions,” she shares.

As a couple, they’ve faced their challenges, especially navigating life in a joint family. But Dilpreet appreciates how Amandeep always supports her. "Whenever anyone in the family says something, he’s there to back me up and make me feel better. He handles everything, so I don’t have to worry,” she smiles. This support system has only deepened their bond.

When it comes to conflicts, the couple doesn’t shy away. “We face conflicts head-on and support each other through them,” Dilpreet explains. Their approach to resolving disagreements is rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

Despite the ups and downs, the spark between them has never faded. “We’ve been together for six years, and the spark is still there,” Dilpreet explains. For date nights, they enjoy simple pleasures—returning to their favorite spots to make more memories.

Dilpreet’s advice for new couples is rooted in the value of friendship. “Be friends first, then partners. A relationship built on trust, communication, and understanding is what lasts,” she says.

Love Lesson: A relationship isn’t about being perfect; it’s about making it work, even when the storm meets the calm. Embrace the chaos, laugh through the confusion, and believe in each other.

These stories remind us that love is not just a fairytale—it’s a journey that takes patience, resilience, and deep connection. Their tales reflect the beauty of modern relationships, where growth is not defined by perfection but by the willingness to turn up 100 percent, face challenges hand in hand, and cherish each moment.

In a world where love often feels rushed and replaceable, these couples show us that real love is built on mutual respect, communication, and genuine fondness for each other. No matter how treacherous the path, true love always finds a way to flourish.

Break Free From Your Mental Prison Embracing the Wisdom of Bandi Chorh Divas
Bandi Chorh Divas, also known as Diwali for Sikhs, is a significant Sikh festival celebrated to honor Guru Hargobind Ji's release from imprisonment. In 1619, Guru Hargobind Ji refused to leave Gwalior Fort without the release of 52 Rajput kings who were unjustly imprisoned there. He negotiated their release, emphasizing the importance of standing up for the oppressed. This event signifies the triumph of righteousness over tyranny and the importance of freedom and justice.
