Visit a secret location for a special dinner

Petrina D'Souza, 24 Jan, 2019 11:14 PM

What adds further excitement to a dinner is the element of surprise. Not knowing what you will be served until the very moment and then totally being mindblown by the food has its own special charm. Maybe this is why Dine Out Vancouver Festival’s Secret Supper Soiree event is one of the most popular events in the list. The appeal of this yearly sold-out event is such that it is attended by the young and old, foodies and non-foodies alike. Attendees, most of them excitedly flaunting the 1930s attire and attitude, can’t wait to find out the secret location and secret meal of the night.

Secret Supper Soiree is a mysterious little affair that whisks you off to a secret location on a classic 1930s trolley to dine on some delicious appetizers, special main course, dessert and wines. Presented by Swallow Tail Culinary Adventures, this year’s theme is Vancouver’s prohibition era (where sale and consumption of booze was banned) that started in 1917 and lasted till 1921. BC used to be the “wettest” province in the country pre-prohibition, so you can imagine the chaos caused after the ban was announced. There were loopholes which no doubt alcohol-loving British Columbians took full advantage of to get hold of their favourite beverage. From secret bars and private club parties to alcohol prescriptions for medical purposes, people tried every little trick to get their hands on banned liquor.

At this tour, attendees tasted a delectable menu created by Vancouver’s own Chef Heather Dosman of Existential eating at a spacious heritage mansion, which is now a community centre. The food was fresh, exquisite and a treat to all senses, and was paired with BC-made white and red wines. The setting was perfect and it almost felt like you are in the 1900s. Taking a page from the prohibition era, a neat little Vancouver-based cooking school served an organic dessert with alcohol-spiked tea – probably one of the ways liquor was consumed openly during the dry period. The night ended with a free swing dance lesson and lots of dancing.
