15-Year-Old girl Charged With Attempted Murder In Stabbing Of Police Officer

The Canadian Press, 10 May, 2018 01:44 PM
HALIFAX — A 15-year-old girl is facing a charge of attempted murder after a Halifax police officer was stabbed while responding to a report of a stolen truck.

The girl and a 15-year-old boy allegedly stole the truck in Truro, N.S., and went on a highway joyride that ended with the stabbing of Const. Andrew Gordon in Halifax early Tuesday.

"It's very sobering and scary," Const. Carol McIsaac said Wednesday. "As a police officer, it's always a thought that's in your mind ... but when something like this happens it really brings it to the forefront."

The girl, who cannot be identified, is currently being treated at a Halifax's children's hospital, McIsaac said.

Her "non-life-threatening injuries" were not a result of the arrest or any police action, she said.

She will face multiple charges when she is medically released including possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, theft, break and enter and mischief.

A 15-year-old boy is also facing charges of theft, break and enter, possession of a stolen vehicle, weapons possession and joyriding and was expected in court Wednesday.

While police are trained to assess the potential danger of any situation, McIsaac said it's "a bit more shocking" when the alleged perpetrator is a teenage girl.

Police said Gordon, an eight-year veteran of the force, approached two people seen fleeing from a stolen truck on Highway 102 near Ashburn Golf Course shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

They said as Gordon attempted to speak to them, a suspect stabbed him and fled again before a police dog unit located them, along with four knives.

Gordon was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery and is reported to be in stable condition.

"He's doing as well as can be expected and we're certainly hopeful that he will make a full recovery," McIsaac said.
