15-Year-Old International Student Struck In Burnaby Dies

Darpan News Desk, 18 Jan, 2018 11:18 AM

Burnaby RCMP is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred yesterday morning.

On Wednesday, January 17 at approximately 7:10 a.m., a vehicle travelling northbound on Cariboo Road struck a 15-year-old female pedestrian. Burnaby RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services immediately attended and the female was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. At this stage it is too early to say what may have caused the collision and the area around the 7200-block of Cariboo Road will remain closed as the investigation continues.

At this time it is believed that the female was an international student and was not attending school in Burnaby.

Anyone who witnessed this collision is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and speak to Burnaby Traffic Services.

Burnaby RCMP is asking for all road users to remain vigilant during the winter months. Burnaby RCMP Traffic Services responded to three other less serious incidents this morning involving pedestrians & cyclists struck by vehicles.

Pedestrian crashes spike dramatically in the fall and winter months because of the shorter daylight hours and poor weather.

Burnaby RCMP urges pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to remain alert in low light and wet weather conditions. Pedestrians should wear reflective clothing, use crosswalks and intersections and make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street. Drivers, please be on the lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in early mornings and after sunset.
