2 more possible leaks in Saskatchewan town where natural gas blast levelled home

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 04 Dec, 2014 10:21 AM

REGINA — SaskEnergy says it is investigating two more possible gas leaks in a community north of Regina where a rupture is suspected in an explosion that levelled a home.

The Crown utility says natural gas and water have been shut off in the suspect area in Regina Beach and no one is being allowed access.

An additional natural gas leak was already discovered overnight as crews were surveying gas lines for potential breaches following Wednesday's blast.

Dave Burdeniuk (BUHR'-deh-nuhk), a SaskEnergy spokesman, says workers dug down to expose the leak at a point where three different mains connect, then allowed the escaped gas to vent into the atmosphere.

SaskEnergy says it appears shifting ground caused by summer flooding led to the blast, which didn't injure anyone, but also damaged about a dozen other homes as well as a post office.

Burdeniuk says lines and connections in the entire community will be checked to ensure they're safe, and a state of emergency remains in effect as the survey continues.
