Accused Winnipeg Letter Bomber Loses Bid For Out-Of-Province Judge

The Canadian Press, 25 Feb, 2016 11:59 AM
WINNIPEG — A man charged with attempted murder after a letter bomb injured a Winnipeg lawyer has lost his bid to have an out-of-province judge hear his case.

Guido Amsel is accused of sending letter bombs to his former wife and two law offices last July.

Two bombs were safely detonated, while one exploded causing  lawyer Maria Mitousis to lose her hand.

Amsel's defence had argued that because some of the victims in the case are lawyers, a judge from another province was needed to avoid the appearance of bias.

The lawyer noted that Winnipeg's legal community is tight-knit and the victims are known to judges and lawyers throughout the city.

Chief Justice Glenn Joyal said an informed person would conclude a local judge could decide the case fairly.
