Alberta Announces Sweeping Six-year Overhaul Of School Curricula At Cost Of $64 Million

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 15 Jun, 2016 11:42 AM
EDMONTON — Alberta is overhauling its education curricula, and Education Minister David Eggen says the new plan will include topics such as climate change, gender diversity and sexual orientation.

Eggen says his department will work with teachers and administrators to redefine six core subjects simultaneously, with all the work done within six years.

Eggen describes it as a "holistic" approach, designed to integrate learning and better prepare students to thrive in Alberta's diversified economy.

He says Albertans will have their say in meetings and through online surveys.

Gender diversity and sexual orientation have been contentious subjects in some Alberta schools, and Eggen says they will work collaboratively with partners to find solutions that work for everyone.

The process will cost $64 million with the first curriculum, for students in kindergarten to Grade 4, rolled out in 2018.
