SURREY, B.C. - RCMP in British Columbia say a woman was shot and injured during a confrontation with police in Surrey this afternoon.

Mounties say they responded to reports of a woman with a weapon around noon.

They say officers arrived and found the woman still "in possession" of the weapon.

Police say shots were fired by officers during an interaction with the woman.

They say the woman was taken to a local hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office, B.C.'s police watchdog, is now looking into police actions in the incident.
