Are You Helping Thieves? VPD Asks

Darpan News Desk , 05 Jun, 2016 02:51 PM
The Vancouver Police Department wants to remind homeowners to be vigilant about their home security as the weather gets nicer.

Police are asking people to lock their windows and doors to protect themselves from break-ins. It’s approaching the time of year when the weather is warmer and people are leaving their windows and doors open as they let fresh air in, try to stay cool, or work in their yards.

Unfortunately, thieves will take advantage of open and unlocked doors and windows to enter your home and help themselves to your property. Thieves will look for any door or window that is insecure, even if it’s above ground.

Investigators generally find that about 25% of residential break-ins show no sign of a forced entry.

“Thieves often target apartments and houses with open windows and doors,” says VPD Constable Brian Montague. “Are you helping thieves by leaving your windows and doors unlocked?”

Police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity to police immediately through 9-1-1 and to consider joining a Block Watch program to help keep their neighbourhood safe.
