Assisted Death Bill's Fate In Question As Commons Consumed With PM Justin Trudeau's Conduct

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 19 May, 2016 01:02 PM
OTTAWA — NDP justice critic Murray Rankin says he doesn't see how the government will be able to meet the Supreme Court's deadline for its proposed assisted-death legislation.

Rankin says Wednesday night's fracas involving the prime minister on the floor of the House of Commons has all but ensured the government is out of time to get the bill passed before the June 6 deadline.

Trudeau found himself in hot water after physically colliding with a female NDP MP while trying to usher the Conservative whip to his seat in order to proceed with a vote aimed at curtailing debate on the bill, known as C-14.

The immediate fate of the bill is now in question; the Commons spent much of Wednesday night and Thursday debating Trideau's conduct.

Leblanc says the government remains committed to getting the bill passed by the court's deadline of June 6.

The bill drew fire this week from the Alberta Court of Appeal, which found it does not comply with the letter of the high court's landmark decision.
