Attack On Toronto High School Thwarted, 17-year-old Under Arrest: Police

The Canadian Press, 08 Dec, 2016 11:07 AM
TORONTO — Police say a tip from the U.S. helped thwart an attack on a high school in Toronto on the 27th anniversary of the massacre at Polytechnique Montreal.

Det. Len Nicholson told reporters a news conference Wednesday night that the tip came from a member of the public on Dec. 1, when a person saw the threat on a blogging site.

"Toronto police received a call ... from an individual in the United States, on the west coast, saying that there was a threat that was posted on a blog site and it was threatening the school in Toronto," Nicholson said.

Police said they later identified the school as Oakwood Collegiate Institute.

The blog was on a site that members have to join, Nicholson said, and he believed it has been removed.

Investigators said they seized a machete, a hatchet, two swords, four knives and arrows after conducting a search warrant on a home Tuesday.

They allege the plan was to take place later that day at the school.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with uttering threats of bodily harm and uttering death threats.

The teen appeared in court Tuesday, and Nicholson said he has been "released with family members and is being monitored by them."

He added that under the terms of his bail, the teen is allowed access to a computer "with supervision."
