Baird greets Queen at Canada House in London as 'foreign affairs minister'

OTTAWA — John Baird's appearance at Canada House in London today with the Queen is creating confusion.

Baird, who quit as foreign affairs minister on Feb. 2, was on hand as the Queen officially reopened Canada's newly refurbished high commission in London following years of renovations.

Baird's name — and former title — are even on the plaque commemorating the reopening, dated Feb. 19. Baird was replaced at foreign affairs on Feb. 9 by Rob Nicholson, the former defence minister.

Gordon Campbell, high commissioner to the U.K., greeted the Queen and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, alongside Baird.

The Department of Foreign Affairs didn't immediately respond to questions about why Baird was at the ceremony.
