Bauer to change ads for hockey helmet in deal with Competition Bureau

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 13 Nov, 2014 11:13 AM

OTTAWA — Bauer Hockey Corp. has agreed to stop making claims about its RE-AKT hockey helmet regarding certain types of on-ice hits and make a $500,000 donation of sports equipment to charity, the Competition Bureau said Thursday.

The federal regulator said the company's advertisements created the impression the helmet would offer players protection from concussions caused by rotational impacts, however, the testing done by the company was not adequate to support the claims.

In addition to the donation to a charity that supports youth participation in sport, Bauer will change its advertising and pay $40,000 toward the cost of the bureau's investigation.

"The bureau takes representations to the public about performance claims that are not based on prior adequate and proper testing very seriously, particularly when they relate to the health and safety of consumers," Matthew Boswell, senior deputy commissioner of competition, said in a statement.

Bauer is part of Performance Sports Group (TSX:PSG), which also includes Maverik Lacrosse, Mission Roller Hockey, Cascade Helmets, Easton, jersey maker Inaria and Combat, a maker of baseball and softball gear.
