BC Couple expecting first child left with no medicare

  • BC Couple expecting first child left with no medicare

A BC couple who are expecting their first child have been hit by frustration after it was revealed to them that they will be facing up to $20,000 in hospitals bills.

Kevin Ganshom who resides in Vancouver told CBC that he has been paying his taxes and it is "frustrating" to learn the system will provide medical care.

Ganshom's wife Bustes is from Peru and currently has no health coverage because her permanent residence application in Canada is stuck in a huge federal government backlog.

The couple met four years ago at a friend's wedding in Peru and Bustes moved to Canada as Ganshom's wife two years later.

The couple says it is sad also because the baby will be in born in Canada.

The Province reportedly requires a letter from the federal government confirming her application for residence is being processed.

Ganshom told media that they are planning to have their baby the "traditional" way with a mid-wife to avoid the bills.
