B.C. Court Hears Robert Pickton Sex Assault Victim Called Liar Deserves Costs

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 27 Aug, 2015 12:43 PM
VANCOUVER — The lawyer for a woman sexually assaulted by the brother of serial killer Robert Pickton says his client refused to settle a civil claim because she was called a thief and a liar.

Jason Gratl says David Pickton offered the woman $50,000 about six weeks before trial, but she continued the court action because he also denied the attack.

Pickton was convicted of sexually assaulting the woman in a trailer on a construction site in 1992 and at the time was fined $1,000.

In June, a B.C. Supreme Court jury awarded the woman $45,000 in part for finding that Pickton had inflicted lasting psychological trauma.

Gratl is asking a judge to award the woman an additional $50,000 to $60,000 in costs by arguing that Pickton's statements attacked her character.

Pickton's lawyer is expected to argue that the woman should not get any more money and that his client should be awarded costs instead.
