B.C. Education Minister Mike Bernie Fires Vancouver School Board

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 17 Oct, 2016 11:35 AM
The Vancouver School Board has been fired by British Columbia's education minister after trustees failed to pass a balanced budget.

Mike Bernier says he has no confidence in the board's ability to act in the best interest of the school district, accusing trustees of focusing on political tactics instead of responsible stewardship.

Diane Turner, a former Delta School District superintendent, has been appointed official trustee of the Vancouver board.

Bernier says he's received the results of a special investigation into the board's finances and allegations of bullying involving trustees and staff members, which he says deepens his concern about the board's ability to govern effectively.

Trustees from the political slate Vision Vancouver said last week they were willing to balance the budget after previously being opposed.

Bernier says the board's readiness at the last minute to change its position undermines stability in the school district.
