B.C. finance minister to provide update

  • B.C. finance minister to provide update

British Columbia's finance minister is set to provide an update today on the province's finances, economy and first quarter results from April to June.

The last update from Selina Robinson showed the COVID-19 pandemic was battering the province's bottom line, but the effects hadn't been as bad as feared.

Robinson reported in July that the deficit of $5.46 billion for the 2020-21 fiscal year that ended March 31 had come in nearly $3 billion lower than forecast.

She told a press conference at the time that public accounts showed B.C. had spent more than $10 billion on COVID-19 response and recovery programs.

The budget released in April for the 2021-22 fiscal year forecast a deficit of $9.7 billion, followed by at least two more years of billion-dollar deficits.

Robinson has said she expects to lay out a plan in next year's budget for how the province will return to future surpluses.
