B.C. NDP Pledges Sweeping Energy Retrofits To Create Jobs, Save On Rate Hikes

Darpan News Desk IANS, 17 Nov, 2015 01:09 PM
BURNABY, B.C. — Opposition New Democrat Leader John Horgan promises to give British Columbia a total energy retrofit if he's elected premier in 2017.

Horgan launched his PowerBC plan while at the B.C. Institute of Technology in Burnaby pledging provincewide retrofits of everything from the Revelstoke Dam to private homes.

He says the plan will create jobs across B.C. and protect families and businesses from rising power rates through accelerated energy retrofits of public buildings, schools, commercial structures and homes.

Horgan says the plan also includes upgrading existing Crown-owned BC Hydro facilities like the Revelstoke Dam, but an NDP statement outlining the plan doesn't mention the Liberal government's current undertaking of the $9 billion Site C hydroelectric dam project in northeast B.C.

Horgan says his energy plan will free BC Hydro to pursue clean energy potential in wind, solar and emerging technologies in partnership with First Nations and clean-energy providers.

The NDP statement does not include a cost estimate of Horgan's PowerBC initiative.
