BC to invest in newcomers

The provincial government will spend nearly 26-million dollars annually for settlement services to help newcomers succeed in their new communities.

That's an increase from six-million dollars the province had previously provided.

Municipal Affairs Minister Anne Kang says she knows first-hand how important it is to have access to services and supports when coming to a new place.

Since February of last year, more than 12-thousand Ukrainians have settled in B-C.

Eight skunks found dead in B.C. had avian flu

British Columbia's Ministry of Agriculture says the skunks were infected with the same H5N1 strain that has caused the deaths of millions of domestic poultry since the outbreak began in April last year. The skunks were found in residential areas in both cities and were taken to B.C.'s Animal Health Centre over concerns they may have been deliberately poisoned.
