BC's Auditor For Local Government Fired Amid Controversy

  • BC's Auditor For Local Government Fired Amid Controversy

VICTORIA — British Columbia's controversial auditor general for local government is being dismissed from her job.

Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes announced that she is recommending auditor Basia Ruta's (BAH'-sia ROO'-tahz) appointment be rescinded.

Oakes says Ruta's obstruction of an intended review of her office has created an intolerable situation that compounds the unstable work environment.

The minister says her decision was made after receiving a recommendation that Ruta be removed from her post by the council that monitors the local auditor.

Last week, Ruta complained about a perception of bias after an audit was launched of her office weeks after the municipal government watchdog came under fire for allegations of an inefficient and unhappy workplace.

Oakes says in a news release that removing the auditor is the only way to ensure proper functioning of the office.
