Better Business Bureau Warning Post-Secondary Students About Rental Scams

The Canadian Press, 11 Aug, 2015 11:00 AM
CALGARY — The Better Business Bureau is warning post-secondary students looking for a place to rent to do their homework or they could fall victim to a scam.

With the new school year three weeks away, the group says students need to make sure they’re not taken advantage of by scammers who will bilk them out of as much money as possible.

Theb ureau says to be wary of ads that ask for money upfront or banking information or give an address that may not exist.

Leah Brownridge says that scammers look to take advantage of unsuspecting college students who may never have been out on their own before.

She says it’s important to meet the property owner in person and do a thorough inspection of the home.

“It’s just something that not every young adult knows how to go about or what to look for.”
