Burnaby Teen Facing Two Attempt Murder Charges

The Canadian Press, 12 Jan, 2017 01:07 PM
A 16-year-old male is facing two counts of attempted murder following an investigation that began with a shots fired call last November in Burnaby.

On November 19, 2016 shortly after 11 a.m., police responded to multiple 911 calls of a shooting in the 7100-block of 14 Avenue in Burnaby. When police arrived, a 19-year-old male was found suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was sent to hospital, treated and later released.

The Burnaby Serious Crime Unit assumed conduct of the investigation and worked diligently to identify and track the suspect. On December 16, 2016, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On December 20, 2016, Vancouver police responded to a report of a shooting in the 2200-block of Herman Drive in Vancouver at 9 p.m. where a 42-year-old woman had been shot. The woman was transported to hospital and continues to receive treatment for her injuries.

On January 6, 2017, members of the Burnaby RCMP Strike Force and High Risk Offenders Unit arrested the suspect in Surrey just before noon. The arrest was made without incident. A loaded handgun was also seized during the arrest.

The male has been remanded in custody, pending a bail hearing in Vancouver Provincial Youth Court on January 12, 2017.

Once this suspect had been identified, our officers worked hard to locate him. His actions were obviously of concern to the police, so it was critical for us to find him and arrest him as soon as possible. The RCMP worked closely with Vancouver Police to bring about a successful conclusion to this file, says Burnaby RCMP Inspector Sanjaya Wijayakoon.
