Calgary Mayor And Homebuilder Settle Defamation Lawsuit Without Costs

    CALGARY — The mayor of Calgary and a homebuilder have settled a lawsuit between them, apparently without any money changing hands.
     
    Cal Wenzel filed a defamation lawsuit against Mayor Naheed Nenshi over public remarks made during the 2013 civic election campaign in which the mayor is alleged to have compared Wenzel to a character in "The Godfather'' movies.
     
    In a joint statement released Tuesday Nenshi says he retracts and apologizes for the statement.
     
    Wenzel says he regrets making any statements that could be misinterpreted negatively against Nenshi.
     
    Last week a judge ordered Wenzel to pay Nenshi $10,000 in legal costs after he failed to convince the court to rule on his lawsuit without the case going to a jury trial.
     
    The terms of the settlement are confidential, but their statement says in the interests of establishing a more cordial relationship they have agreed to settle the lawsuit without costs. (CFFR, The Canadian Press)
