Canada Must Pave The Way For A 'Smart' And Green Transportation System: Marc Garneau

    TORONTO — The transport minister says the country needs to make its transportation system smarter and greener.
     
    Marc Garneau says the country needs to become a leader in the use of so-called smart transportation systems, in which cars, trucks, ships and planes connect and communicate with the infrastructure they use.
     
    He says weaving technology into infrastructure will ease the flow of people and goods around the country and make travel safer.
     
    Garneau also says the country has to prepare for an electric transportation system that includes public transit, intercity rail and charging stations for cars.
     
    A quarter of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions come from the transportation sector, with cars and trucks the largest emitters.
     
    Garneau made the comments during a luncheon speech in Toronto.
