Canada Sets New Target To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 15 May, 2015 10:42 AM
WINNIPEG — Canada is promising to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.

Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq (ah-GLOO'-kah) says the target is fair and ambitious and reflects Canada's growing economy.

She says the plan includes reductions to methane emissions produced by the oil and gas industry.

A new international emissions regime is to be negotiated at a United Nations conference later this year in Paris.

Last month, Environment Canada reported that national greenhouse gas emissions rose between 2012 and 2013 to 726 megatonnes, the fourth consecutive annual increase.

That makes it improbable that Canada will meet its previous promise to cut emissions 17 per cent below 2005 levels by 2020.
