Canada To Host El Salvador In Crucial World Cup Qualifier At B.C. Place

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 14 Apr, 2016 01:03 PM
VANCOUVER — The Canadian men's soccer team is returning to B.C. Place Stadium.

Canada Soccer announced today that the national team will host El Salvador in Vancouver on Sept. 6 in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

Canada has played its last two home games at B.C. Place — a 1-0 victory over Honduras in November and a 3-0 loss to Mexico last month.

That match on March 26 attracted a raucous crowd of 54,798 that set a national team attendance record on home soil in any sport.

Canada (1-2-1) sit third in Pool A in the penultimate round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 tournament in Russia, trailing second-place Honduras (1-2-1) on goal difference. Only the top two teams move on to the final round of qualifying.

Canada visits Honduras on Sept. 2 and realistically needs a draw or a victory in that one to have the El Salvador game in Vancouver mean something.

Mexico (4-0-0), ranked 16th in the world by FIFA, sits atop the group and has already qualified for the final round of qualifying, followed by No. 86 Honduras, No. 95 Canada and No. 98 El Salvador (0-2-2).
