Carney to join Smith for Alberta oil pipeline update in Calgary today

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 02 Jul, 2026 09:41 AM
  • Carney to join Smith for Alberta oil pipeline update in Calgary today

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are set to hold a joint news conference today in Calgary on a proposed pipeline project.

Smith had set a July 1 deadline to submit a proposal for a new pipeline to the federal major projects office for possible fast tracking under Carney's national building plan.

A news conference with Smith which had been set for Thursday morning was delayed to later in the day and Carney will be joining her for the event.

Smith's government signed an agreement with the federal government last fall setting conditions for a possible bitumen pipeline to the West Coast.

The agreement is tied to progress on a major carbon capture network by the province's biggest oil producers, which have said they shouldn't have to bear the multi-billion-dollar cost alone.

The news conference will be Carney's third of the day, as he's scheduled to be in Vancouver today for an infrastructure announcement with B.C. Premier David Eby, whose government opposes the pipeline proposal, and to meet with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
