  • Charges laid in UBC crash that killed two students

VANCOUVER - Charges have now been laid against a Vancouver man following the deaths of two students who were on a sidewalk when they were hit by a vehicle at the University of B.C.

An RCMP statement says 22-year-old Tim Goerner has been charged with two counts each of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving.

Eighteen-year-olds Evan Smith and Emily Selwood were walking near the university student residences at the Point Grey campus early on Sept. 26, 2021, when a vehicle veered up onto the sidewalk and hit them and a parked car before stopping.

Smith and Selwood died at the scene.

Parents of the teens are remembering Smith as an avid rock climber, paddler and volunteer with Scouts Canada, while Selwood was already an accomplished, medal-winning rower who believed everyone should be treated with compassion and dignity.

Court documents show Goerner is scheduled to make his first appearance in provincial court in Richmond on Friday.
