Charlottetown Police Rescue Dog That Tumbled Down Into Open Manhole

    CHARLOTTETOWN — A Charlottetown dog had to be rescued after tumbling into an open manhole, police said.
     
    The dog's owner called for help after his pet fell in over the noon hour Sunday, Sgt. Walter Vessey said Tuesday.
     
    A veteran officer, Const. Markham Long, climbed into the manhole, "picked up the dog and carried it to safety and returned it to its owner, who was very happy," said Vessey.
     
    "In fact, the dog reportedly wagged his tail."
     
    In a news release, police said the manhole became dislodged after it was struck by a snow plow. Charlottetown has a leash bylaw, but it is not clear whether the dog was restrained.
     
    "I don't recall this kind of thing ever happening," Vessey of the dog's tumble. "This could be the first."
