WINNIPEG — Manitoba's children's advocate says domestic violence should be enshrined in law as a child protection concern.
Darlene MacDonald says there is a growing recognition that witnessing domestic violence is traumatic for children.
But she says Manitoba law doesn't recognize domestic violence as a child protection issue.
MacDonald says the Child and Family Services Act hasn't been significantly overhauled in eight years and should be amended.
She says this is especially important in Manitoba which has the second highest rate of domestic violence in Canada.
The issue was highlighted in a study released by MacDonald's office regarding youth suicide.
