Conservative MP criticizes military's decision on uniforms, war memorial

    OTTAWA - A Conservative MP whose riding includes a major military base is criticizing a directive which tells soldiers to avoid wearing uniforms in public.

    John Williamson, who is also a member of the Commons defence committee, tweets that the sight of uniforms is as symbolically important as re-opening Parliament after Wednesday's shooting.

    Williamson was among hundreds of MPs who were trapped inside their caucus meeting rooms as a shoot-out raged outside their doors.

    Williamson also says that Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson was misguided in deciding to remove honour guards from the National War Memorial.

    The MP, who has Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in his New Brunswick riding, says the guards should be armed instead of removed.

    Reservist Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down Wednesday morning as he stood guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown soldier with an unloaded rifle.
