Contracts announced for Alaska Highway

The federal government has awarded two contracts totalling more than 103-million dollars for maintenance work on he Alaska Highway in northern B-C.

Public Services and Procurement Canada says the contracts cover work on two sections of the highway, from kilometres 133 to 968.

The department says the contracts have requirements for Indigenous participation, with a minimum of 24-million dollars in subtracting going to First Nations on the south section of the route and 33-million-dollars on the north section.

The contracts also require employment and training opportunities for the seven First Nations along the highway.

A small plane has crashed at the regional airport in Langley, B.C., after hitting a pickup truck while landing, sending three people to hospital. Langley Township deputy fire chief Russ Jenkins says the crash happened at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when the plane came down too low over the road beside the airport.

The 37-year-old driver remained at the scene. Police say they learned he had been prohibited from driving because of being unlicensed and impaired. Mounties say in a statement they obtained a breath sample and while the man did have alcohol in his system, it was under the legal limit.
