Crown Appealing Acquittal Of Driver Who Killed Doctor Alphonsus Hui In Vancouver

The Canadian Press, 15 Jun, 2018 12:47 PM
VANCOUVER — An appeal has been launched after a British Columbia man was acquitted of dangerous driving in a crash that killed a doctor in Vancouver.

Dr. Alphonsus Hui was killed in November 2015 when his Suzuki was hit by a speeding Audi driven by Ken Chung.

Last month, B.C. Provincial Court Judge Gregory Rideout found there was reasonable doubt that Chung's excessive speeding met the threshold for criminal fault.

The BC Prosecution Service says in a news release that the Crown is asking the B.C. Court of Appeal to re-evaluate the ruling, saying it contains errors and an argument could be made that the same ruling would not necessarily have been issued if the errors were not made.

The prosecution service also says an appeal is in the public interest.

More than 50,000 people have signed an online petition started by Hui's daughter, Monique Hui, which calls for justice in the case.
